인생찬가 - 롱펠로

TELL me not, in mournful numbers, 내게 말하지 말라, 구슬픈 가락으로 ,
Life is but an empty dream ! 인생은 한낱 텅 빈 꿈이라고!
For the soul is dead that slumbers, 왜냐하면 잠든 영혼은 죽은 셈이고,
And things are not what they seem. 사물은 것 보기와는 다르기에.

Life is real ! Life is earnest! 인생은 현실이며, 인생은 진지한 것!
And the grave is not its goal ; 무덤이 인생의 목표는 아니다.
Dust thou art, to dust returnest, 너는 흙이니 흙으로 돌아가란 말은
Was not spoken of the soul. 영혼을 두고 한 말이 아니다.

Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, 즐김도 슬픔도
Is our destined end or way ; 우리의 운명지어진 목표나 길이 아니다.
But to act, that each to-morrow 행동하는 것, 그래서 내일이
Find us farther than to-day. 오늘보다 더 나은 우리를 발견하리라.

Art is long, and Time is fleeting, 예술은 길고, 시간은 화살 같다.
And our hearts, though stout and brave, 그리고 우리의 심장은 고동친다. 튼튼하고 용감하긴 하나
Still, like muffled drums, are beating 언제나 천으로 감싼 북마냥,

Funeral marches to the grave. 무덤으로의 장례 행진곡을 울리고 있다.
In the world's broad field of battle, 세계의 드넓은 전장에서.
In the bivouac of Life, 인생의 야영장에서,
Be not like dumb, driven cattle ! 말 못하는, 쫓기는 가축이 되지 말라!
Be a hero in the strife ! 투쟁에서 영웅이 되라!

Trust no Future, howe'er pleasant ! 미래는 믿지 말라, 아무리 즐겁다 할지라도!
Let the dead Past bury its dead ! 죽은 과거로 하여금 죽은 자를 묻도록 하라!
Act, act in the living Present ! 행동하라, - 살아있는 현재에서!
Heart within, and God o'erhead ! 마음속엔 용기, 머리 위엔 하느님

Lives of great men all remind us 위대한 사람들의 생애는 모두 우리에게 상기케 한다.
We can make our lives sublime, 우리가 우리의 인생을 숭고하게 만들수 있음을,
And, departing, leave behind us 그리고, 떠나면서 우리뒤에

Footprints on the sands of time ; 시간의 모래밭에 발자국을 남길 수 있음을,

Footprints, that perhaps another, 발자국, 어쩌면 인생의 엄숙한 바다 위로
Sailing o'er life's solemn main, 항해하는 다른 사람이,
A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, 쓸쓸한 난파당한 형제가,
Seeing, shall take heart again. 보고서, 다시금 용기를 얻게 될 발자국

Let us, then, be up and doing, 자, 그러니 일어나 일하자,
With a heart for any fate ; 어떠한 운명도 감수할 마음 갖고
Still achieving, still pursuing, 언제나 성취하며, 언제나 추구하며,
Learn to labor and to wait. 일하고 기다리는 법을 배우자
